“But these words people threw around - humans, monsters, heroes, villains - to Victor it was all just a matter of semantics. Someone could call themselves a hero and still walk around killing dozens. Someone else could be labeled a villain for trying to stop them. Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.”

― V.E. Schwab, Vicious

What would you be willing to give up for power? Your life? Your soul? Your humanity?

This story starts with two young men. Victor and Eli. These college roommates followed a path of experimental research. Their endless ambition drives them to give up more than they even realized. Eventually they both commit suicide only to bring themselves back to life… with superhuman abilities. Now with their college thesis proved correct but their friendship torn apart and something crucial missing, they go their separate ways.

These books are a story of found family, revenge, and the flaws of humanity. There is no good and evil. No superhero and villain, because they are all villains and heroes in their own way.

Schwab creates some amazing characters, lovable like Mitch and Sydney, mysterious like June, morally grey like Victor, and broken, vengeful people like Eli. She pulls at all emotions, revealing the flawed nature of humanity. Everyone has a motive and a mindset that will make you question your own view on life. I absolutely love the though provoking nature of Schwab’s writing. Meaning is tucked in every page.

These books are fast paced and exciting with equal parts plot and dialogue. The chapters flit back in forth in the timeline, something new every chapter. Their history and backstory is slowly revealed leaving you always wanting more. Her take on superheros in a morally grey city setting does not disappoint. She highlights the balance of Victor’s power to control pain and Eli’s regeneration power. With lots of dark themes; violence, death, and loss, Schwab weaves another beautiful story of life.

The ending is both satisfying but ambiguous, leaving room for more of V.E. Schwab’s incredible writing.

This was a 10/10 read. Schwab is actually releasing a third book, Victorious, in 2026 so stay tuned for that finale to this incredible adventure!

Happy Reading, everyone!!!
