Out of the Silent Planet 🌎 vs The Screwtape Letters

These are two wildly different books that are written by the same author, C.S. Lewis. I just finished Out of the Silent Planet and am currently in the middle of The Screwtape Letters!

(Usually I don’t write about school books but I’ve enjoyed these and wanted to share them with you!)

C.S. Lewis’s versatility when it comes to writing is really incredible. Out of the Silent Planet was a Sci-Fi adventure, complete with a trip to Mars (Malacandra) and a whole world of creatures and beings.

Then on a totally different topic, The Screwtape Letters is a collection of letters from an experienced Demon to his nephew, Wormwood. In them he advised, guides, and encourages the “junior temper” in his evil endeavors.

C.S. Lewis is a faithful Christian/ex-atheist. He wrote The Screwtape Letters as a way to better understand the ways Demons tempt us from the path of faith.

He has been a pioneer in Christian writing, having authored over 30 books!

🌍 Out of the Silent Planet was a bit slow but the creativity of the creatures was very interesting and fun to imagine. Ransom (the main character) was really inspiring. Not only was he kidnapped and left on a strange planet but he faced the death of a ‘hross’ who was his friend and he met multiple different creatures all with a different language.

I loved the ‘hross’s accent where they added an ‘h’ to the beginning of every word! So cute!

Lewis really captured intense character growth in Ransom, from fear to courage, from hiding and running to being willing to sacrifice his own life for the protection of the inhabitants of ‘Malacandra.’

Now on the other side, The Screwtape Letters. I am only halfway through but so far it has been incredibly insightful. The point of view is wildly creative and honestly really eye opening to my own faults in mundane life.

The demons use things like small family annoyances to being proud of “being humble” to keep human thoughts selfish and sinful.

“It is funny how mortals always picture us as putting things into their minds: in reality our best work is done by keeping things out...”

— Screwtape (The Screwtape Letters)

Makes me think a lot harder about my subconscious and my everyday habits… 😳
